BWC Chief Addresses OMA Members

November 4, 2022

Ohio BWC Administrator/CEO Stephanie McCloud addressed nearly 80 members at the Nov. 1 meeting of the OMA Safety and Workers’ Compensation Committee.

McCloud said the BWC continues to see fewer workplace injuries as Ohio’s claims rate is now lower than those of neighboring states. She touted the BWC’s Workforce Safety Innovation Center, which offers R&D grants to encourage more Ohio-made personal protective equipment — and informed members that the 2023 Ohio Safety Congress and Expo will be held March 8-10 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

Gongwer News Service reports that the BWC is still in a strong financial position, despite a decline in total assets compared to a year ago. As of Sept. 30, the State Insurance Fund held a net $6.1 billion in assets. 11/1/2022

OSHA Injury Reporting Requires New Online Account

OSHA reminds employers that they are required to connect their Injury Tracking Account to a Login.gov account in order to submit their 2022 workplace injury and illness data next year. If they have not already done so, employers are encouraged to set up an account soon. Here’s more information.

As a reminder, OSHA does not send notifications to report the Form 300A data. March 2, 2023 is the deadline for covered employers — including manufacturers with 20 or more employees — to submit their completed Form 300A with 2022 injury and illness data. (Learn more at OSHA’s FAQ page.) 11/1/2022

Top 10 OSHA Violations of 2022

OSHA has announced its preliminary top 10 most frequently cited workplace safety violations for the 2022 federal fiscal year. All of the violations on the 2022 list also appeared on the previous year’s list, although there was a considerable shift in the rankings — primarily due to an increase in hazard communication violations. 11/1/2022

BWC’s Upcoming Training Events

The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation is hosting several upcoming no-cost training opportunities. These BWC offerings will address ergonomic principles (Oct. 31, virtual); machine guarding (Nov. 2 in Ontario); first aid in the workplace (Nov. 2 in Reynoldsburg); hazardous waste (Nov. 7, virtural); and flammable liquid and gas safety (Nov. 16 in North Canton).
