Halloween Costumes Can Bring Scary Workplace Risks

Halloween festivities may be fun, but costumes can create some frightening safety hazards in manufacturing workplaces. Masks, bulky clothing and unfamiliar footwear can interfere with movement, visibility and balance, turning a harmless holiday celebration into a potential workplace injury.

On the production floor, even a seemingly innocent costume can pose serious risks. Loose fabric and dangling accessories can become entangled in moving machinery, while masks may obstruct an employee’s view of approaching forklifts or other hazards. Costumes that interfere with hard hats, safety glasses or other required protective equipment can also leave workers vulnerable to injuries.

“Halloween is a great opportunity to have some fun at work, but safety rules don’t take the day off,” said Jacob Sargent, director of public policy services for the Ohio Manufacturers’ Association. “A costume that works at an office party might be dangerous on a production floor. Manufacturers should make sure employees can celebrate without compromising the precautions that keep them safe.”

Manufacturers planning workplace Halloween celebrations should establish clear costume guidelines, keep potentially hazardous outfits away from production areas and maintain all required safety precautions. The scariest thing on the factory floor shouldn’t be an avoidable workplace injury. 10/29/2026
