Workplace Violence Prevention Starts Before a Crisis

Workplace violence is drawing increased attention as employers look for better ways to identify warning signs and intervene before an incident occurs. A recent Risk & Insurance report from the National Comp Conference highlighted prevention strategies centered on employee reporting, coordinated response plans and leadership accountability.

Experts stressed that employers should make it easy for workers to report concerning behavior, establish clear escalation procedures and regularly test how the organization would respond when warning signs emerge. The goal is to catch risks early, before they become safety incidents or costly workers’ compensation claims.

“Workplace violence prevention is ultimately about recognizing risks early and making sure employees know how to raise concerns before a situation escalates,” said Jacob Sargent, director of public policy services at the Ohio Manufacturers’ Association. “Clear reporting procedures and a defined response plan can help employers protect their people and reduce the likelihood of a serious incident.”

Manufacturers should pay attention as policymakers and regulators take a closer look at workplace violence prevention. Panelists said requirements now concentrated largely in health care could eventually extend into industries including manufacturing and retail, making proactive planning increasingly important. 10/7/2026
