Report: Senate to Move Soon on Education Overhaul
January 20, 2023A plan to restructure the Ohio Department of Education failed to pass in the final days of the 134th General Assembly. But it has been reintroduced in the 135th General Assembly — and it could be before the full Ohio Senate by the end of February.
Like its predecessor, Senate Bill 1 would create a Department of Education and Workforce, headed by a gubernatorial appointee (instead of the state board of education) to give the administration more oversight. The agency would have two divisions — one for K-12 education and one for career-technical education and workforce training. The bill is a priority of Senate President Matt Huffman (R-Lima).
