Report: Senate to Move Soon on Education Overhaul

A plan to restructure the Ohio Department of Education failed to pass in the final days of the 134th General Assembly. But it has been reintroduced in the 135th General Assembly — and it could be before the full Ohio Senate by the end of February.

Like its predecessor, Senate Bill 1 would create a Department of Education and Workforce, headed by a gubernatorial appointee (instead of the state board of education) to give the administration more oversight. The agency would have two divisions — one for K-12 education and one for career-technical education and workforce training. The bill is a priority of Senate President Matt Huffman (R-Lima).
