The Wall Street Journal (subscription) last week gave Columbus and Cincinnati positive press for having some of the nation’s most resilient job markets during the pandemic. An executive at Cincinnati-based Fifth Third Bank said many manufacturers in the region “really didn’t miss too much of a beat” because they were generally considered essential industries. Meanwhile, here are the latest unemployment figures for Ohio’s metropolitan statistical areas and all 88 counties. Last week, Ohioans filed 101,825 initial applications for unemployment compensation, although officials say that of those claims, at least 29,000 have been flagged as suspicious. 2/22/2021
