Ohio Manufacturers Urge Removal of SNAP Purchase Restriction from Budget

05/16/2025

This week, the OMA testified in opposition to a provision in the state’s budget that would heavily restrict what Ohioans on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits can buy.

Specifically, the restrictions would apply to “sugar-sweetened beverages”, like soda. Drinks like milk, juice or Pedialyte will not be impacted.

The OMA’s testimony highlights the confusing statewide patchwork of regulations this would create, where SNAP recipients could purchase these products in one state, but be barred from them in another. The testimony also highlights the restrictions as anti-competitive and anti-consumer. 5/13/2025
