Business Equipment Investment Posts June Gains

U.S. business investment showed fresh strength in June as new orders for core capital goods rose 0.9%, beating expectations, while shipments surged 1.9%, their largest monthly increase in four and a half years.

Demand was particularly strong for computers and electronic products, electrical equipment and primary metals. The gains suggest businesses are continuing to invest in technology, machinery and productive capacity despite elevated borrowing costs and lingering economic uncertainty.

Equipment spending is an important indicator of business confidence because it reflects decisions to modernize operations, improve productivity and prepare for future demand. Continued capital investment can also support stronger order books across equipment, components and industrial supply chains.

“Businesses invest when they see opportunity ahead,” said Jacob Sargent, director of public policy services for the Ohio Manufacturers’ Association. “These numbers suggest companies are looking beyond the immediate uncertainty and continuing to modernize, expand and prepare for future demand.” 7/30/2026
