| Ohio electric bills have climbed 62% over the past decade, yet utilities continue pushing billions of dollars in new infrastructure investments based on demand forecasts that deserve far more scrutiny.
On Friday, Oct. 23, Ohio Manufacturers’ Association (OMA) President Ryan Augsburger will bring that fight to the City Club of Cleveland’s Future of Energy in Ohio forum, joining FirstEnergy Corp. Vice President and Chief Risk Officer Abigail Phillips for a discussion about rising electricity costs, utility accountability and the financial risks of Ohio’s projected data center boom. At issue is an increasingly costly imbalance. Utilities are seeking major investments to accommodate anticipated electricity demand while existing customers face the prospect of paying for infrastructure tied to projects that may never materialize. OMA has consistently challenged the use of speculative forecasts to justify spending that could leave manufacturers and other customers footing the bill. “Utilities should not get a blank check to build billions of dollars in infrastructure based on forecasts they cannot substantiate,” Augsburger said. “If the demand is real, prove it. If new customers need new infrastructure, make them pay for it. Ohio manufacturers should not be underwriting utility investments built on promises that may never become reality.” The noon forum will put competing perspectives on Ohio’s energy future before a public audience at a time when electricity affordability and accountability are becoming defining economic issues.
